How Staying Hydrated Helps Your Teeth

How Staying Hydrated Helps Your Teeth

You’ve probably heard the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but did you know that staying hydrated can help keep cavities away?

Drinking water daily and staying hydrated helps keep your mouth clean, strengthens your teeth and gums, and can prevent cavities.

How Does Drinking Water Help Keep Your Mouth Clean?

When you drink water regularly, you’re not only staying hydrated but also helping your mouth clean itself. Drinking water helps wash away harmful acidic bacteria that your food and saliva produce throughout the day. Combined with brushing your teeth daily, you can ensure that your teeth will be clean and good to go.

How Does Drinking Water Help Strengthen Your Gums?

Keeping your mouth moist and hydrated will not only fight off bacteria and acids that you eat throughout the day, but it will also help ensure that plaque doesn’t build up after you’ve eaten. When caught between ice cream or fruit for a dessert, it’s better to eat something that can’t physically stick to your teeth. Sodas and juices don’t achieve the same effect as water does when you’re eating, so making sure you have a glass of water will help. This ties into cavities as well. Drinking plenty of water daily will keep plaque at bay while helping fight gum diseases.

What Else Can Drinking Water Do For Your Mouth?

There are many things drinking water can do for your mouth! We’ve talked about the basics of the oral hygiene aspect of hydration, but drinking water can actually help:

  • Rebuild enamel on your teeth
  • Fight and prevent bad breath
  • Prevent stains from forming on teeth
  • Fight against dry mouth
  • Keep your gums and mouth hydrated
