Did You Know a Broken Tooth Can Be Fixed with a Permanent Crown in One Day?
Suppose you’ve been really stressed out and grinding your teeth, and a tooth or filling breaks. Suppose you’re involved in some kind of accident, get hit in the mouth, and crack a tooth. Not only could it hurt, but the jagged edge of the missing tooth structure could cut your tongue or lip.
What do you do?
You would typically schedule an appointment with the dentist and get a temporary crown or filling. The dentist would use the traditional messy impression material and then send that to the lab to have a permanent crown made.
Then you would have another appointment in a few weeks when the dentist gets the permanent crown back from the lab. Assuming the impression of your bite wasn’t distorted and the crown fits, you’re done. If not, rinse and repeat.
But fixing a broken, cracked or damaged tooth doesn’t have to be that much of a hassle. In most cases, we can examine the problem and send you home with a permanent crown on the same day.
How We Provide Patients with Same-Day Crowns
At Tuttle Dental Care, we use a machine called, CEREC to create custom ceramic dental crowns in one visit. Here’s how the process works.
If we determine that you’re a candidate for a same-day crown, the first step is to prepare your tooth. Then we use our CEREC 3D intraoral scanner to take a video image of your tooth. This creates a precise 3D digital image of your tooth and surrounding teeth, instead of using the old messy impression material.
This digital image is automatically sent into to the CEREC milling machine, which creates your crown. You don’t have to sit in the dental chair for this. Go read a magazine, get some work done on your laptop, or take a power nap. It takes about 15-20 minutes to mill the crown, which is made from ceramic that’s comparable in strength to your natural tooth structure.
Once the crown is ready, you come back to the chair, we put the crown in, and you can be on your way. The entire visit typically takes about an hour and a half.
With a same-day crown, you don’t have to wear a temporary crown for weeks and worry about it popping off or irritating your gums. And you don’t have to take time off from work two or more times for appointments. Get the crown during your first visit and you’re done.
Of course, not every single patient is a candidate for a CEREC crown. As we mentioned in a previous blog post, we look at the whole system – the teeth, gums, jaw, and the roof and floor of the mouth – to find out if there’s a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.
But in most cases, if a patient comes in with a broken or cracked tooth, we can provide them with a permanent crown on the same day without compromising strength or fit.
It’s just one more way that we maximize each appointment so you leave our office with a big smile on your face – a smile you can be proud of.
